The Power Glove: A Brief History Lesson

Apparently throughout much of the 1990’s there was a number of hackers attempting to break the NES Power Glove free from its bondage to the 8-bit Nintendo and bring it into the ultra-modern world of … Virtual Reality. However, either they never succeeded or soon realized that VR is …. um…. kinda dated. A quick google search of the term ‘power glove’ leaves you looking at a plethora of half-finished sites from the mid to late 90’s claiming to soon have the key to connecting the Power Glove to the PC. Yet, despite much coding and debugging, most never got the glove to communicate well, or became frustrated at the terrible performance of the ultrasonic detectors that the Power Glove was forced to use. However, these abandoned ghost-sites do provide us with something of value - a couple seconds of entertainment as we remember what the infancy of the internet looked like. Peruse these sites for any length of time and you will become fully aware of why animated GIFs, scrolling text, and *shudder* embedded music are design techniques that were discarded along with Geocities. Actually, some of these sites do have some useful information and I’m sure they were the cream of the web back in their day.

If the Power Glove truly has any use left in it, I am almost certain that its tie to ultrasonic signals must be severed. The depth of motion that the Power Glove demands is simply too much to be handled by three measly detectors arranged atop a computer monitor. If only there was something else that could be used…
