I/O Brush

This incredible piece of gadgetry was developed in the labs at MIT. The project is a great demonstration of how technology can be used to not only advance art but create art as well.

I/O Brush is a new drawing tool to explore colors, textures, and movements found in everyday materials by “picking up” and drawing with them. I/O Brush looks like a regular physical paintbrush but has a small video camera with lights and touch sensors embedded inside. Outside of the drawing canvas, the brush can pick up color, texture, and movement of a brushed surface. On the canvas, artists can draw with the special “ink” they just picked up from their immediate environment.

The applications of this technology are practically endless. I wonder what would happen if one was to scan this video with the I/O brush and then paint a canvas with it. Would it be a crazy recursive “mirror in a barbershop” kind of effect, or would it simply destroy the space-time continuum?

  1. […] Hat’s off to zerosign.net for linking to the I/O Brush demonstration. This thing allows you to “dip” your brush onto any surface and then “paint” with that color, pattern or movement. It’s hard to explain so check out the video. […]

  2. I wet myself. As an artist, this is amazing, as a tech loving teen, YAY!

  3. That is the coolest dog I have ever seen.

Oh, and that brush? AWESOME. That and photoshop could make a very interesting team…
