PowerGlove Mouse Continued

Filed under: hacks, NES — leadingzero

Zerosign reader Austin Weber took it upon himself to make his own PowerGlove Mouse based on my previous design. In addition to cleaning up all the wires and using smaller circuitry components he also has a killer demo of the glove with Unreal Tournament. He mapped the in game controls so that his thumb controls forward motion, his pointer finger controls the trigger and his arm motion controls the camera view.

Notes from Austin on his modifications:

I had the 4 wires coming from the glove bundled together, as the ones from the mouse. Then I skrewed the base of the mouse into the glove, and drilled another hole that the wires from the batteries come up from under the glove. The circuit on the left is held on by a single wire going around the base of the glove into the top 2 holes of the breadboard. This allows it to be sturdy as well as flexible. Also I used telephone wires from a telephone cable, they are small and sturdy (easy to solder) took out the mouse wheel and strung them all out of there.

  2. This looks fantastic. It reminds me a lot what the Revolution System might introduce to the gaming world.

  3. What a joke
You can’t even backtrack or strafe. Lame shit man…lame…I bet you suck online with it too….try making one that is actually useable in an fps and then maybe you’ll be onto something.

  5. The glove definately was its limitations and I still prefer a mouse but I admire the work and effort that went into building it. I wish I took the time to do things like this.

  7. Man, give him a break, sure it might be a tad lagy, and some controlls arent ideal, but this is still very cool. I admire him for getting it to all work, you could map strafe to thumb and pinkey buttons, and acuracy could be easily fixed up with a bit more refining. Great work.

  13. it seems like a good rendition sure, but the explination compaired to the original modder was lacking to say the least.

  14. @joe. I don’t think that austin was trying to explain the detailed process of modding a powerglove mouse - that has already been done here: http://www.zerosign.net/index.php/powerglove-mouse/

I think he was simply stating how his was different.

  15. It would be nice if you could customise it to act like a “joystick” so there is a zero point on an x axis and y axis (such as pointing straight forward), and when you deviate from that point it will keep “turning” in the game until you return to that point. This would solve the issue of reaching the point where you can’t turn any further without moving your body also.

  16. A) Sabbath….your a freakin cockbite ^_^.
    B) The powerglove rocks. If you really wanted to you could screw w/ a few things and use pinky as backtrack or something. Better yet… get another for the left hand (needs modding of course) and use BOTH hands :P .

    Comment by Crash — May 14, 2006 @

  17. I prefer using my left hand for movement (ingrained habit from years of gaming), so I’d leave all the movement-related commands to the keyboard. I’d definitely map the thumb-twitch to “switch to next weapon” instead, as that would leave nearly all the weapon aiming/firing/selecting functionality to the Glove.

Ross, that’s definitely a great idea. Maybe there could be a hack-together of a gyro mouse and joystick?

  18. Ross, i was thinking of something very similar.

Tilt hand forwards for forward movement, and back for backwards, tilt right for look right, and left for left. Forefinger for trigger, maybe thumb for secondary function. Get some buttons on the wrist of the glove and use them for other mainly useful buttons (quickswap, change weapon, jump, etc). That, at least, is what i intend on doing. I think its a mod im actually going to try and invest in. Will be kickarse playing FPS with that, and you could have similar mappings for other types of games. I can’t see myself hooking my whole arm up to surf the web with it, but its all preference.

For those who don’t like this mod, don’t comment. Unless its constructive, its not welcome nor needed. Simple.

Good ideas guys, and lets hope it keeps going with other mods like this!

  21. I wonder if Sabbaths parents know he/she is using a computer unsupervised. Such shallow ill informed comments about a ground breaking achievement as this really just highlight how invalid his/her opinion is.
